Pre-race tips from Coronation Double Century’s race doctor

(Cape Town, 15 November 2011) The annual Coronation Double Century is set to take place in Swellendam on 26 November. Race doctor Dr Basil Bonner of Mediclinic has warned cyclists taking part in the race not to underestimate the difference between a 100km and 200km race distance, especially in terms of the physiological effect the longer distance has on a rider’s body.

Focusing your Anaerobic Capacity Intervals

Spring is here and spring racing is starting to kick in. After a long winter, one of the challenges of early season racing is required ability to accelerate and change speeds frequently. The first few races of the year typically remind us of the need to do both Anaerobic Capacity work and Sprint Work.

Training Stress Score: If I score more points do I win a prize?

As a coach and a former pro cyclist, I always looked at training from those two perspectives and continually looking for new ways to help my athletes achieve their goals while at the same time using the ‘tried and true’ techniques that I used when I raced.  The advent of the power meter or more specifically, the ability to record every second the wattage, heart rate, cadence, etc. has allowed us to discover three key things about yourselves:

  1. Precisely quantify the training ‘response’ to a given training ‘dose’. Or how much have you improved or not.
  2. The ability to understand the ‘response’ of the training ‘dose’.  Or what training ‘dose’ caused a specific energy system to improve or not.
  3. The ability to prescribe precisely the training ‘dose’.  Or figure out the optimal amount of intervals, workouts, and rest that give you the best result.

What Is Functional Threshold Power (FTP)?

The term “threshold” has become synonymous with the word “confusion” in the minds of many athletes. There are many different words for essentially the same thing: anaerobic threshold (AT), lactate threshold (LT), maximal lactate steady state (MLSS), onset of blood lactate (OBLA), and just plain old “threshold.” It seems that there are just as many possible definitions, with different versions of the concept based on heart rate, blood lactate, wattage, and so on. As a result, even in many scientific articles the authors have to present their “own” definition to clarify what they are talking about.
