In hospital getting sewn back together. Also looks like I have a broken finger. Is it really necessary to have 3 races in one bunch!?

LET THE RACE BEGIN! 23 TEAMS FOR THE 2011 LE TOUR DE LANGKAWI

LANGKAWI - 138 riders from 23 teams representing 28 nationalities will line for the sixteenth edition of Le Tour de Langkawi due to kick off from the Langkawi island on January 23 and finish in Kuala Lumpur on February 1st.

South Africa's Team MTN Qhubeka

“Our technical department had done a great job attracting teams from all around the world but it’s been a mission to finalise the start list when some teams folded or couldn’t come at the last minute”, said the CEO of Le Tour de Langkawi Mohamad Salleh. “But we’re very happy to have such a strong field with so diverse horizons. All the continents will be competing once again in Malaysia.”

Pro Continental outfits Farnese-Neri, Androni, Colnago-CSF, Europcar, Unitedhealthcare, Skil-Shimano, CCC Polsat and Landbouwkrediet are ready to make the headlines as the Hors-Category event Le Tour de Langkawi is their first opportunity to score a lot of points for the UCI sporting evaluation system and eventually upgrade to the Pro Team status next year.

The ill-fated Pegasus team from Australia and the late withdrawal of Geox-TMC gave some Asian teams the opportunity to line up in Asia’s historical biggest stage race. National teams from Korea, Malaysia and Singapore will contest in the Asian category alongside continental teams Tabriz, Azad and Suren (all from Iran), Terengganu Pro Asia, LeTua (both from Malaysia), Giant Kenda (Taiwan), Champion System (Hong Kong), Aisan (Japan) and Max Success (China). Garmin-Cervélo’s development team Chipotle from the US, South Africa’s MTN-Qhubeka and Australia’s Drapac-Porsche will complete the field.

Diminutive Italian climbers Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago-CSF) and Emanuele Sella (Androni) will face a strong competition in the climbs from Tour de France rider Pierre Rolland (Europcar), Korea’s Gong Hyo Suk who finished second overall last year, and Colombian veteran Libardo Nino (LeTua).

Sella, Androni’s main contender is optimistic of their team’s line-up “Our team is already well prepared. And now, I’m also ready for this race. We are confident that our young rider, Jonathan Monsalve is able to do something in the race.”

Bunch sprints will feature Italy’s hope Andrea Guardini (Farnese-Neri), German Robert Förster (Unitedhealthcare), Dutchman Kenny van Hummel (Skil-Shimano) and Malaysia’s first ever stage winner Anuar Manan (Terengganu Pro Asia) while it will be a race closely followed in Japan with the presence of super star Yukiya Arashiro (Europcar), climbing sensation Yukihiro Doi (Skil-Shimano), sprinter Takashi Miyazawa (Farnese-Neri) and the Aisan team returning with stage 4 winner from last year Taiji Nishitani.

Anuar Manan, the defending Sprint Jersey winner who rides for Terengganu Pro Asia this year feels confident with his new teammates which includes Japanese veteran rider Shinichi Fukushima, “I will defend my 2010 title as the Sprint Champion, at the same time we will try to win at least one stage. For me, being in a new team is not a problem because most of them are the fellow cyclists that I know. We have done a good training camp and get to familiarize with each other.”

The teams were presented with colorful Malaysian traditional cultural show and dance at a ceremony in Dataran Lang, graced by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, former Prime Minister of Malaysia and the race’s inventor who was really happy to have the race returning to its roots after three years absence.

“‘This is where it starts…’ as the theme-song of LTdL goes, has a deeper meaning this year as the race returns to its origin, the people of Langkawi have waited and are really happy to see the Tour back.” He said at a press conference.

Le Tour de Langkawi 2011 is organized by the Youth and Sports Ministry of Malaysia together with the Malaysian National Cycling Federation. The 2011 Tour is held from 23rd January to 1st February covers a total distance of 1315.4 kms with 10 stages, starting in Langkawi Island and ending at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
