The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge series of events kick off this weekend with the Children’s Cycle Challenge on Saturday and the Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday.
“The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge is an event that the whole city can get excited about – whether participating or supporting,” said 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Ravi Naidoo. “To include a broader audience of participants, we’ve grown the range of events so that cyclists of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy the festival of cycling.”
The call to Ride for a Purpose covers all the events in the series and participants are encouraged to find a deeper reason for their cycle, whether it’s to raise awareness, funds, or simply to ride on behalf of someone who can’t.
The Momentum 94.7 Children’s Cycle Challenge is the first of these and serves as a great opportunity for tomorrow’s cyclists to get excited about the sport and for families to spend a day outdoors together.
With different distance events for each agegroup, there is something for all kids, from toddlers to 12-year olds.
“Momentum puts families at the core of our business and the Children’s Cycle Challenge is a fantastic day out for families,” said Momentum’s Danie van den Bergh.
“In addition to the fun happening out on the bike routes, we’ve creates a family chill zone with an entertainment area for kids and space for parents to relax, overlooking the dam at the stunning Waterfall Country Village – the new venue for the Kids Challenge.”
Fans of Darren “Whackhead” Simpson’s prank calls will not want to miss the opportunity to get a signed copy of his brand new CD, “Epic Fail” as Darren will be at the event to meet listeners and autograph the new album.
On Sunday 13th November, families, friends and fans of dirt, mud and the great outdoors will get a chance to hit the gorgeous landscape of the Waterfall Country Village for the Momentum 94.7 Mountain Bike Challenge.
Three distances mean that there’s something for everyone. The 10km is a great introduction to the sport for newbies, and an exciting adventure for families to undertake together. The 25km route offers a great route through various obstacles for intermediate riders and the 50km will thrill even die-hard mountain bikers with a combination of single track, long slow drags, river crossings and breathtaking scenery.
Participants need to collect their registration packs from the Waterfall Country Village, off the R55 on Thursday and Friday from 09h00 to 17h00 or on Saturday afternoon from 12h00 to 16h00.
Next week, the festival rolls on, in the lead up to Cycle Challenge Sunday with the Momemtum 94.7 Cycle Challenge Experience, where participants not only collect their race packs but get to enjoy the very best in cycling and lifestyle gear, innovations and advice. The Experience is open on Thursday17th and Friday 18th November from 10h00 to 18h00 and on Saturday 19th November from 08h00 to 15h00.
On Saturday 19th November, Momentum has organised a Twitter ride, with top international cyclists as well as local sports legends. Starting and finishing at the Waterfall Country Estate, the ride will be an easy 35km to warm up for the following day.
Sunday 20th November heralds the main race, with nearly 25 000 cyclists taking to the roads, starting from Woodmead, winding around the City of Joburg and back to the Waterfall Country estate.
A number of major roads will be closed in and around Joburg, for a full list of these as well as an interactive map that can plot out alternate routes, visit www.cyclechallenge.co.za
