Momentum has secured four top international professional cyclists to join the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge on 20 November.
Dan Martin from team Garmin Cervelo is a top 10 UCI ranked cyclist worldwide. He will be joined by brothers Dean Downing from team Rapha-Condor-Sharp andRuss Downing from Team Sky. Completing the quartet will be cycling legend, Stephen Roche who is a Triple crown winner, meaning he won the Tour de France, Giro D’Italia and World Champs in one year – next year will be the 25th anniversary of this phenomenal achievement.
“Momentum has been involved with the Cycle Challenge for three years now and each year we try to create an experience that is even better than the previous year’s,” said Momentum’s Danie van den Bergh.
“This year we wanted to bring some of the glamour of the European tour to the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in Africa.”
The four cyclists have been specifically brought in for the event but will be joined by a number of other international cycling names who have an affinity for South Africa and the Cycle Challenge.
Commentator Phil Liggett, known as the Voice of Cycling, will be back for the 15th edition of the race. South African Daryl Impey, who has just signed for theAustralian Green Edge team will be taking part, as will South African educated Chris Froome from Team Sky. Chris finished second in this year’s Vuelta A’ Espania, the tour of Spain – one of the three grand tours.
“In addition to being a world class event, the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge has set itself apart with the Ride for a Purpose campaign,” said van den Bergh. “These cycling legends were impressed with the concept and each of them will be riding for their purpose on Sunday 20th November.”
In addition to participating in the main race on Sunday 20 November, all of the international participants, including Phil Liggett will be doing a 'TwitterRide' - a warm up ride the day before the race. They will be joined by local sporting legends Joel Stransky and Francois Pienaar, among others.
Anyone is welcome to join the Twitter ride which will start and finish at Waterfall Country Estate, the same finish venue as Cycle Challenge Sunday. Participants will cover a gentle 35km and rolling road closures as well as marshals and medical support will ensure the safety of participants.
Momentum has generously laid on some coffee and muffins at the finish area, where cyclists can also get photographs and autographs with these cycling stars.
It’s a great opportunity to rub shoulders with cyclists who are the top of their game, and to make sure your bike is ready for the big event the following day.
