In hospital getting sewn back together. Also looks like I have a broken finger. Is it really necessary to have 3 races in one bunch!?

Entries for the Western Cape’s second biggest cycling event are open

Entries for Die Burger Cycle Tour 2010, the final seeding opportunity for the 2011 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, are now open.

The event takes place on Sunday 5 December, and will start and finish at the Stellenbosch High School in Jannasch Street (off Merriman Street).

“Since our inaugural event in 2007, Die Burger Cycle Tour has become the second biggest cycling event in the Western Cape – that’s an achievement to be proud of,” says editorBun Booyens. “This year we’ve introduced a new 15km road distance, and I hope many parents and youngsters will tackle this enjoyable route together.”

The 15km fun ride is perfect for families with young children (there is no age restriction). Die Burger Cycle Tour also features the longer 44km and 98km routes for more experienced cyclists.

 How to enter

Visitwww.dieburgercycletour.co.za and follow the easy instructions to enter online. Entries will close 22 November 2010, or as soon as entry limits have been reached. Entries are limited to 4,500 (98km); 1,500 (44km) and 400 (15km) on the three respective routes.

 Route descriptions

 The challenging 98 km route:

  • Cyclists will encounter their first climb of the day when they make their way up the scenic Old Helshoogte Pass, before descending through Pniel towards Franschhoek.
  • When they reach the R45, riders will take a right towards Paarl, hugging the vineyards alongside the mountains and joining the R301 to Wellington.
  • After a left-turn onto the R44, riders will travel along the Agter Paarl Road before heading back to the finish in Stellenbosch.

 The scenic 44km route:

  • Cyclists will follow the 98km route, over the Old Helshoogte Pass and through Pniel.
  • Just after the railway line at Boschendal, cyclists will take a left onto the R45 in the direction of Klapmuts.
  • The two routes join up again on the R44, about 15km before the finish in Stellenbosch.

 The 15km family-friendly route:

  • Starting at Stellenbosh High School, cyclists will ride along the scenic Jonkershoek Road for 8km before turning around at the entrance to the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.
  • Cyclists will make their way back to the finish, just around the corner from the High School.
  • Although there is a bit of a climb towards Jonkershoek, this is an easy and non-technical route, aimed at parents who wish to do a fun ride with their children.
